Epsom salt is not just used for baths but it’s prescribed as a pill to put more magnesium sulfate directly into your body.
Do not use magnesium sulfate as a laxative without medical advice if you have:
- Stomach pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- perforated bowels
- severe constipation
- colitis or toxic megacolon
- a sudden change in bowel movements lasting 2 weeks or longer.
Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to take this medicine if you have:
- diabetes
- kidney disease
- an eating disorder (anorexia or bulimia)
- using a laxative for longer than 1 week
- low magnesium diet
If you do consume a magnesium sulfate pill and over dose, the side effects are as follows:
- hives
- difficulty breathing
- swelling of your face, lips tongue or throat
Less serious side effects may include diarrhea or upset stomach.
