Personally, I love everything there is about coconuts!
I cook with coconut oil, put raw coconut in my smoothies, use coconut oil as a face moisturizer and love to drink coconut water. But what’s it actually doing for my body?
Coconut water is:
- Low in sugars
- Low in Carbohydrates
- 99% Fat Free
To me, coconut water tastes and feels more refreshing than any sports drink or energy drink I’ve ever tried.
Why choose coconut water over sport drinks and energy drinks? (Data is based on 100ml drink.)
- Coconut water has about 294mg of potassium, while most sports drinks contain 117mg and has more than most energy drinks.
- Coconut water has less sodium. Sport drinks have around 41mg, coconut water ranges around 25mg and energy drinks have about 200mg.
- Coconut water is high in Chloride ranging at 118mg, while sports drinks have about 39mg.
“Chloride is a chemical the human body needs for metabolism (the process of turning food into energy). It also helps keep the body’s acid-base balance. The amount of chloride in the blood is carefully controlled by the kidneys.” Article
Other factors that have been known to help by consuming coconut water:
- Raises your metabolism
- Replenishes body’s fluids after a work out

- Orally rehydrate your body since it is a isotonic drink
- Boosts poor circulation
- Cleanses the digestive track
- Boosts immune system
- Promotes weight loss
- Detonates your body
- Fights viruses such as flu, herpes and AIDS
- Brings nutrients and oxygen to cells

If your pregnant, doctors sometimes advise woman to drink coconut water. Since it makes you urinate, which helps prevent urinary track infections and of course all the other benefits listed above.
So tomorrow is the coconut water blind taste test. I went to Whole foods and purchased every coconut water there was on the shelves. Plus I bought one real coconut for the real stuff!
A friend and I will try each coconut water and rate it for the best taste. Do you have a favorite?
