If a huge earthquake hits California it’s more than likely all the phone lines will be tied up and you won’t be able to contact all your family and friends to find out if they are alright.
Make sure to:
- Have a meetup location
- Have an out of state number you and your family can call
- Have an Earthquake kit
- Never duck and cover!!!
Meet up location:
This is a spot that you will arrange to connect with each other. It could be your home, a local school, family residence, someplace that you feel would be safe.
I would even suggest having two meet up locations. The first location would be one of the listed above and the second would be the closest shelter to the first meet up location.
Out of state number:
My family has arranged all of us to call a relative that lives in Montana. After the disaster, we have to immediately check in. This way you only have to make one call. It’s much more efficient not to call the whole family to see if everyone is alright.
Earthquake kit:
This was covered Tuesday. Blog
Never duck and cover!!!
We were all taught as kids to duck and cover under something if an earthquake hits. This is a terrible thing to do. If you are, to go to a table stay under it, bed, door frame, or stay in your car, you are risking the chance of being crushed to death!
The best bet is to duck NEXT to a large solid structure. Such as a bed, pool table, car, heavy desk that won’t crush on top of you.
Many people have died staying in their cars during earthquakes. Things have crushed on top of their cars killing them instantly or entrapping them in their vehicles. The best thing to do is get out of your car and duck next to it.
