The media has everyone worried about a “big” earthquake that’s supposed to hit the west coast fault line.
For those of you that don’t know much about earthquakes, these are the fault types:
From Contemporary Physical Geology, H.L. Levin, Saunders Publ.
- B) Normal: Dip-slip faults where the block above the fault has moved downward. Observed in the Western USA Basin, Range Province and along oceanic ridge systems.
- C) Reverse: A fault where the rocks above the fault move up.
- D) Strike-slip: Two blocks slide past one another.
- D) Right lateral Strike-slip: The San Andreas Fault here in California is an example of a right later fault.
- E) Oblique-slip: Neither dominantly vertical nor horizontal and is less common.
- F) Thrust: Dip-slip fault when the upper block above the fault plane moves up and over the lower block.
If we do experience a huge earthquake lets make sure we’ll be prepared with the right safety kit materials.
