Warning, sprouts can contain E. coli and Salmonella: Sprouting

Yes, the FDA said “increasing numbers of illnesses associated with consumption of raw sprouts, the FDA is advising all persons to be aware of the risks associated with eating raw sprouts (e.g., alfalfa, clover, radish). Those person’s who wish to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses from sprouts are advised not to eat raw sprouts.”1

I highly believe, don’t listen to everything you read. Just buy organic and know how your sprouts are being handled.

The nutritional facts, the easiness of just soak, sprout and eat sounds like a no-brainer, but be very careful!

Make sure to follow these instructions to ensure you are handling your sprouts in the healthiest way possible for consumption.

  • Wash all your sprouts with filtered water before eating them. (unless they are flax seeds.) BLOG
  • Ask your grocer if the sprouts are ISGA-approved or look for the ISGA seal if your not buying in bulk
  • Only purchase sprouts if the sell by date is current or even a few days ahead on pre-packaged sprouts. Always ask for the sale date if it’s not labeled on the package.
  • Make sure the roots stems are white or creamy. Don’t buy any spouts if the buds are not attached. Dark color or musty smell run! I’m kidding… you don’t need to run, just walk away very fast and don’t buy them.
  • Sprouts need to have a clean, fresh scent to them.
  • Must keep sprouts refrigerated.2

If you are sprouting at home make sure to follow the same guidelines with cleaning, smell and look. xxx <3 A&L
