A dear friend of mine invited my sister and I for some delicious apple pie. Turns out he made the best apple pie I have ever tasted! I wish I had a picture to show you.
While eating the apple pie, nonchalantly he say’s “By the way, this has zero sugar in it.” Our jaw’s dropped to the floor. He must have been pulling our legs! This was delicious!! I asked if he used stevia but it was another sugar substitute.
The secret is Xylitol. Instead of using sugar, he added Xylitol.
Not only is Xylitol used as a sugar substitute, but it’s also used for other health benefits. Who would have thought?
Since I love to discuss sugar substitutes I thought it was only appropriate to make this week about Xylitol. I’m not talking about artificial sweeteners. I’m talking about extracting a sugar like substance out of roots and other foods to make low-calorie desserts!
What is Xylitol exactly?
- Xylitol is a carbohydrate that looks like a white crystalline substance that looks and tastes like sugar.
- Occurs naturally in our body. We produce up to 15 grams of xylitol daily.
- Found in fibrous fruits and vegetables.
- 5gm of xylitol has 9.6 calories, compared to regular sugar which has 15 calories.
Tomorrow find out the benefits of using xylitol.
